This past weekend I invested in a four day men’s intensive in the mountains of Colorado. It was part of Ransomed Heart Ministries (John & Stasi Eldredge); and was called Becoming Good Soil. It was primarily led by friends Morgan Snyder, Jon Dale, Alex Burton, and other Ransomed Heart leaders. The gathering included fifty young men and thirty-two older facilitators from all around the world. It was such a life-giving weekend. And by God’s grace, I drove down from the mountain a better man than the one who drove up the mountain.
A primary focus of the teaching was on sonship and understanding that you are God’s favorite—a beloved son of a good God. The weekend included great teaching (John Eldredge even drove up to teach a session), fellowship, meals, and campfires that included great craft-style beverages and cigars.
One highlight for me was hearing men share their stories. As they shared, I noticed many men often talked about “the best job I ever had”.
The last session included each older facilitator having one-minute to share whatever they wanted. It was amazing as each man stepped to the microphone and shared what was on their heart. As I thought and prayed about what I wanted to share, I laughed out loud at the possibility of sharing my life-message in one-minute.
Following is what I said … in one-minute!
My name is Tim Evans, my wife and I live in Colorado Springs.
I love being married … I love being married.
You don’t hear that very often from men my age.
I’m 60 years young (not old) and throughout my life I’ve been in many battles …
None have been more intense than the battle for my heart … and for marriage.
And in six decades of life I’ve lived many adventures …
My most amazing adventures have been trying to understand that a beloved son (me-Tim Evans) and a beloved daughter (my bride-Anne O’Shaughnessy Evans) are invited to live out the miracle and mystery of two becoming one. And to experience—to taste with all our senses—what it means to be naked without shame.
Looking back over my life … I’ve had many jobs. But, being a husband is by far the best job I’ve ever had.
And marriage is soo much more than a job.
